Jennifer Kenney - Building A SQL Rules Engine

    When: Thursday, August 11th, 2011, 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
Social Time starts at 6:00 PM!

    Who:
    Jennifer Kenney

Jennifer Kenney is a Senior SQL Developer with Molina Healthcare.  She has been developing software professionally since 1990, and has concentrated on databases in medical applications.  She has twice been a presenter at the Richmond, VA Code Camp on issues in SQL Development.  She currently lives in Goochland, VA with a wonderful husband and two marvelous dogs and a cat who is well above-average.

    Abstract

Building a SQL Rules Engine – SQL is not the ideal platform for a Business Layer, but sometimes you don't have much of a choice!  The same rules for performance apply here as would if you were coding in VB.Net or C#: you want to encapsulate your code and you want to read once, apply all your rules, and then write the changes once.  Unfortunately, SQL doesn't have the same tools to expose multiple arrays of writeable data held in memory to multiple procedures that exist in the .Net framework.  This presentation focuses on using the XML DML syntax to solve this problem, allowing for quick reads and writes of in-memory data that can be passed in and out of multiple black boxes, allowing for quick processing and code encapsulation.  The presentation also features cartoons.

  • Presentation from RSSUG Meeting Thursday, January 15th, 2009, 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

    Recap:

I think last night’s presentation went pretty well, we had a lot of participation from the group and I know if nothing else I learned a few things.   If anyone wants any of the slide deck or the T-SQL scripts for parts of the presentation we did not get to they can be download from the links below.   The portion of the demonstration for the GUI setup of database mirroring that required some t-sql are downloadable below as well.   I hope everyone who turned out had a good time and learn something.  Thank you all for turning out and a special thank for our sponsor Richmond Code Camp 2009!

    Who:

    Steve Fibich

    What: SQL 2005 Database Mirroring

    Abstract:

SQL Server 2005 introduces a number of new features, one of which is Database Mirroring. This is the 2nd out of the box technology from Microsoft for SQL Server that allows native configuration of a Hot Standby Server. It has a completely different configuration than its cousin SQL Clustering and opens up a whole host of secondary possibilities for the resourceful DBA. Come by and take a look as we kick the tires on this new but seldom used solution.

    How was it?:

Thank you everyone for coming out and joining us for the SQL Server 2008 Community Event.  Everything from my point of view went off without a hitch.  We will have the presentations posted with links on this blog post as soon as they become available.  Special thanks to MaconIT for lunch, Solid Quality Learning for breakfast and a great two day training give away.  Thanks to Microsoft for a number of great give always including TechNet subscriptions and some great shirts and jackets.

Thank you to Andy Leonard, Kevin Hazzard and Susan Lennon without who this would not have been possible.

    August's Presentation: SSIS FrameWorks!

Here is the slide show for this event:Object Oriented Technics applied to SSIS Development.zip; Code samples to follow soon (check back in a day or two)

    This Months Sponsor-McClain Group II

    Abstract:

SSIS Frameworks focuses on Object Oriented programming techniques applied to SSIS Development.  We will explore the concepts of encapsulation and modularity from an Object Oriented Programming perspective and how this can be applied to developing SSIS packages.   SSIS Frameworks will look into building both a metadata structure and the SSIS package design, to support breaking units of work into small reusable SSIS packages and how to structure those packages for re-use.  Real world examples from a Data Warehouse to Master Data Management Systems will be referenced to show how this type of SSIS development can cut development time and allow for coding work to be spread across a team.  We will also get into the nitty gritty of some SSIS configurations/event handlers/variable passing.

    About Steve:

Steve Fibich currently works in Richmond VA at PFGC as the Systems Architect on a Master Data Management project utilizing SQL Server 2005 and SSIS 2005 pulling data from iSeries, Unix, VAX,  and SAP for a massive system integration effort.  He has been working with SQL Server since 6.5 building Data Warehouses,  building integration systems for third party product integration, creating Master Data Management systems , and doing general DBA work for the past 10 years.
